David began working with blind people in 1985, while working at a group home for blind developmentally disabled adults in California. He went on to get his MA degree in Orientation & Mobility from California State University in Los Angeles. He moved to Portland, Oregon to work an O&M instructor for Vision Resources for Independent Living (VRIL). VRIL had a Deaf-Blind recreation program, coordinated by Carol Brown-Wollin, which sparked David's interest in the Deaf-Blind community. In 1990, he moved to Seattle and became the O&M instructor in our Deaf-Blind Program. At first David taught with the help of an interpreter, but by the time he graduated from the American Sign Language & Interpreting School (ASLIS) in 1995, he was able to teach classes on his own. Along with providing consultation from his professional experience, David has supported Deaf-Blind people to work with the city and county to improve the bus, van and commuter train transportation, along with crosswalk accessibility. In 1998, the Washington State Deaf-Blind Citizen honored David for his service to the community with the Dan Mansfield Memorial Award.

David loves the Northwest. You might find him biking to the Lighthouse, out on a hiking trail, or at home pounding nails in his house or digging in the garden.
